La Tarde — on the fifteen

The La Tarde carousel's graphics and overlays on a fifteen-second cut, on the beat. Two structures, storyboarded before anything is built: A treats the carousel as a film — its cards inside the timeline, one block of dance footage under PERFORMANCES; B leaves the delivered A cut untouched and lays the waves and the three titles over it. Every frame below is full size (click to open); the two drafts are there so the beat is judged, not imagined. Nothing here is delivered yet — the codes are assigned once a structure is picked.

Structure A — the carousel as a film

recommended · 450 frames · spans 31 · 46 · 30 · 31 · 15 · 16 · 15 · 31 · 30 · 62 · 61 · 82

Drum strike (2 beats) → card 1, the identity (3 beats) → the PERFORMANCES block: eleven beats of the A cut's dance footage, re-picked sign-free at 9:16 (round 54; the butterfly swapped for the feather sweep in QC round 1) — arms-out skirt wave, feather sweep, the kids' march, arms-crossed swagger, hat-tip, chalice raise, painted profile — with the headline landing at beat 6 (frame 92) and gone by frame 239 → card 3, the altar (4 beats) → card 4, the crafts (4 beats) → the close from 12.26 s, 82 frames. The waves slide in over the drum and hold; on the cards they are the same pixels, so card → footage → card is continuous. The film's graphics carry the headline alone (round 55, client): the three feature sub-lines are dropped from PERFORMANCES, the altar and the crafts, and each headline holds the exact position it had — only the sub is gone. All four cards are the film's own (round 59, client): the ruby tint comes off the identity card, the altar and the crafts here — the close was already the film's from round 54 — and the footage is ungraded too, so the magenta now lives only on the end title. Each card's type plate is still asserted identical to its carousel twin, so only the background diverges, and the build asserts the divergence itself cannot silently revert. The carousel keeps its wash and its sub-lines and is untouched.

The A cut as delivered, with the waves held over the whole body and the three titles on the cut's own edges — PERFORMANCES at 1.09 s, COMMUNITY ALTAR at 5.22 s, ARTS & CRAFTS at 8.85 s — and the carousel's close in place of the end card at 12.47 s. Its weakness is shown rather than argued: the altar and the crafts have no footage, so their words land on whatever the dance cut is showing at that moment.

The draft

Structure B · draft

draft · EN · 9:16

The delivered master with the overlay pass — no re-cut, footage unwashed. The same audio as EL15P-A. Kept as the record of what was compared: B was not chosen, so it has not been rebuilt since, and its end title is still the carousel-style close — A's end title is now typeset like the -B card. That difference is the round-54 change, not a difference between the two structures.

Worth a decision

four picks, then the build
Structure — A or B

A is recommended. It puts a real photograph under COMMUNITY ALTAR and ARTS & CRAFTS — the carousel's own — and gives PERFORMANCES the one thing the footage pool actually holds, dance. B keeps the delivered edit intact and costs nothing new, but its second title lands on a skirt fan: COMMUNITY ALTAR over a spinning skirt says the wrong thing at the moment it says it, and no timing inside that cut fixes it, because there is no altar footage to cut to.

The wash on the footage — on or off

A's block frames are shown washed (the carousel's photo treatment, fitted once as a static grade so the footage sits in the cards' world) and unwashed (the footage as EL15P-A delivers it). The draft is washed. B is unwashed by construction. QC round 1 re-targeted the wash to the cards' own wall — the numbers are under What was checked.

⚠ INTERACTIVE eyebrow on card 3

The copy defines an eyebrow above COMMUNITY ALTAR — INTERACTIVE — but the approved cards do not carry it, so the storyboard does not either. Say the word and card 3 (and B's second title) gains it. The sub-line that used to sit under it — "Interactive: add your recuerdos" — is gone from both the film and the carousel (round 56).

⚠ Spanish copy — proposed

For EL15P-C-ES / EL15S-C-ES the three features read as the headline alone — the sub-lines in grey are no longer drawn anywhere (round 56, your note) — on the film or the Meta carousel — and are listed only to record what they were:

  • PRESENTACIONES (PERFORMANCES) · sub dropped: Danza tradicional, en vivo
  • ALTAR COMUNITARIO (COMMUNITY ALTAR) · sub dropped: Interactivo: agrega tus recuerdos
  • ARTE Y MANUALIDADES (ARTS & CRAFTS) · sub dropped: Para toda la familia

The brands stay in English — Ofrendas y Recuerdos, Arden Fair, Visionary Collective — as everywhere else in the set. Nothing Spanish is built until this reads right.

Recommendation

Build A. It is the carousel the client already approved, played as a film: the identity card, the three selling points, the close, each on its own beat count, and the dance footage doing the one job it can do — being the performances. B's economy is real, but its middle title is its undoing: COMMUNITY ALTAR arrives over a skirt fan, and the words and the picture disagree for two and a half seconds in the middle of the ad. A costs a little more edit and pays it back in every frame where the word matches what is on screen.

What was checked

The grid

Every cut on the 0.511 s beat grid, positions quantised from the absolute timeline: A = 31 · 46 · 30 · 31 · 15 · 16 · 15 · 31 · 30 · 62 · 61 · 82 = 450; B = the EL15P-A plan verbatim, 76-frame close. PERFORMANCES first inks frame 92 and starts out at 230, gone by 239 — before the altar card at 245.

The cards

All four are built by the carousel's own builder on the carousel's own grid, with the identity keep-out and the 9:16 text band (y 269..1536) asserted as they are on the Meta set. tarde_open, the altar and the crafts are the film's own un-tinted copies (round 59): same builder, same grid, same type — each _fg plate is still asserted byte-identical to CA00P-A-1/3/4 and CA00S-A-1/3/4 — but the photographs here carry no magenta, while the approved carousel keeps its wash. The three feature sub-lines were dropped in round 56 from the carousel and the film together, so the type still agrees. The layout still reserves the sub's space, which is what holds every headline on the position the approved cards had; re-solving without it would drop the headline 77px on 9:16 and 58px on 1:1, and on the square would take the identity lockup with it. The close is the exception (round 54, client): its end title is typeset like the -B end card — the full-size lockup, the two-line date, the -B block position — asserted byte-identical to endcard_b_fg.png on 9:16 and endcard_b_sq_fg.png on 1:1 in both languages, and asserted not byte-identical to CA00x-A-5 so the match cannot silently revert.

The overlay

The waves over footage are the cards' band plate split in two, slid in over 0.62 s like the hero rail and held — asserted equal to the cards' bands once settled. The headline rises into place on the carousel's grid — it keeps that grid, and therefore its exact position, even though the film no longer draws the sub-line beneath it — and its ink is checked frame by frame against the 9:16 band (slide 20 px, ink to row 1471 of 1536).

The square crop

1:1 shows 56% of the source height and the top wave now holds over it, so sq_focus's bare-frame crops were re-checked at kicker-on for every shot of the new block (frames 92 · 104 · 107 · 138 · 153 · 169 · 184 · 215 · 230): no head under the wave, no face under the type. Three re-frames for this lane: arms-out 0.30 → 0.20 (her hair off the wave's edge); the opener, now IMG_1651@2.0 (round 3), solved at 0.10 — the rising chalice stays ~90 px clear of the top wave at the out-point (0.20 leaves 11 px, 0.25 puts it under), the head sits 60 px above the kicker at the in-point, and the seated crowd at the out-point falls below the type block, half under the bottom wave; and the chalice raise — re-solved in QC round 4 as a moment change, not a crop: in-point 3.0 → 3.9 s at 0.43 (below; at 3.0 no focus the face rule allows gets the cup out from under the band). The square window is the full source width, so there is no horizontal control — the headdress disc cannot be centred over PERFORMANCES without a punch-in, which the 1:1 lane does not carry. The other five keep their EL15S-A framing. EL15S-A is untouched.

Sign-free block (round 54)

The block's first cut fronted the JCPenney fascia three times — bloom (1734@0.6), double spiral (1729@1.8), triple fan (1729@7.8) — and 9:16 has no crop room, so the gold kicker sat under a store sign. Re-planned on the same spans and edges (kicker still on frame 92) with the A cut's sign-free portrait shots; every in- and out-point pulled at 1080×1920 from the raw clip and from the render, read at full size. One swap inside that list: 1725@2.2 (kid kick) → 1712@3.6 (kids march) — a legible REALLY BIG DEALS poster fills the kick's left third for the whole shot. The listed spare, 1662@1.6, is out: the JC of the fascia sits at its right edge. QC round 1 rejected the butterfly (1693@13.2): a legible red 50% tag at the dancer's shoulder, Big & Tall across the entrance, a wall poster, racks and a mannequin — no punch-in clears it — and it is the close's own dancer, dress and paper flowers, so the film showed the same shot twice. The six clean clips were re-surveyed at 1080×1920 every second, both ends of every candidate window read at full size from the raw clip: 1712 could only sit beside its own march at 138 (a jump cut); 1717 after 2 s cuts a child's face at the right edge, before that it repeats the swagger; 1685 puts a face on the right edge from 1 s and overlaps the profile's own frames; 1713 at 2.5 s cuts a face at the left edge, at 3–4 s it makes four kid shots in a row; 1651 at 0.5 s has an EXIT sign in frame, at 1 s a legible poster behind the feathers. The pick was IMG_1651@1.5 — the feather sweep into the chalice raise: sign-free at both ends from the raw clip and from the render, no face on an edge, a different performer from the close. QC round 3 moved its in-point to 2.0 s (same span, same edges): at 1.5 the 1:1 frame was the closed headdress from behind at half the carousel's luminance; from 2.0 the whirl is open, the shoulder and the rising arm read by mid-shot, and the shot's last frame (2.967 s) is the frame the chalice raise at 3.0 begins on — nothing repeats. Both ends re-pulled at 1080×1920 from the raw clip and from the render: no signage; the raise's out-frame keeps a defocused red exit-light glow at the far left edge, ~40 px, no lettering, present in every round. Residual, noted rather than hidden: the painted profile has a mirrored, out-of-focus PINK through the glass behind her.

The wash (QC round 1)

Round 54 fitted the carousel's photo recipe to the block's own frames; QC measured the result a stop darker than the cards with half the magenta lift (walls ~110/71/70 against CA00P-A-2's mauve, R−G ≈ +50, B ≈ R−35). The grade is now anchored on the reference card instead: one static per-channel three-point curve sends the block's median wall/floor neutral (-, measured over the block's 14 sample frames) onto the card's wall (-), holds the black at - and lands the block's own p95 (-) on the reference strip's p95 (-) so a store window carries the card's tint rather than going pink. Identical across the seven shots; verified through ffmpeg at delivered size against the rails on 0/0 frames. Block strip after: L None, S None, p05 None, p95 None, R−B None (before: L 67.7, S 140.3, p05 11.7, p95 148.3, R−B 34.3; CA00P-A-2 strip: L None, S None, p05 None, p95 None, R−B None). Walls at frames 107 / 184 (the 1651 travertine, graded, no overlay — `gradecheck`): 123/67/94 and 129/68/86, from 110/71/70 and 112/76/73 under the round-54 grade.

The scrim (QC rounds 1 & 3)

Over the footage block the bottom gradient starts 80 px higher than on the cards — from y 984 instead of 1064 on 9:16 — so the gold kicker keeps the carousel's contrast floor whatever the skirt is doing. Round 3: the scrim now sits under the wave plates, as it does on the cards (bg + scrim, bands, type) — it had been composited over them, so the bottom bands on every footage frame read ~18/49/56 for the cards' 43/175/179. On 9:16 it also runs 10% denser from the kicker's row (y 1360) down, and a soft edge vignette (120 px feather, −0.4 stop, both sides, from y 900 down) sits on the block only, from cut to cut. The cards' scrim is untouched (they are still byte-identical to the carousel); 1:1 carries the same layer order and no polish.

QC round 4/5 — what changed
  • The gate — go on both formats (round 5) — the marketing-director pass read every A frame at full size in 9:16 and 1:1 against the brief and the approved carousel cards and returned go on both formats, minors only. Its picture finding is closed below; its page-copy note is the mid-sweep caption now carried under frame 107 in both formats.
  • Minor, both formats, the 184–215 hold — the EXIT sign is gone. A small red illuminated EXIT sign sits on the left wall for the whole hold (9:16 x 10-70, y 764-794 at frame 184; it drifts with the camera to x 95-140, y 714-744 by 214, and the 1:1 window shows the same wall 361 px higher). Of the two fixes offered, the deeper left-edge vignette was measured and rejected: at −0.8 stop the sign region still reads 141/42/55 against the wall's 114/61/81 (R−G 99.3 vs 53.2) — a dimmer red rectangle, not a wall — and the vignette is a full-height left-edge ramp on 9:16 only, so it would have to be pushed up over the dancer and duplicated for 1:1. Taken: the clean plate. The wall is NOT locked off - the sign's own box, measured on all 31 frames of the shot from the raw clip, drifts from (7,509,46,528) to (76,483,104,501) in source pixels - so a static 50x30 patch could not have held. The op carries a quadratic track (fitted to +/-1.5 px) and a 61x37 box that follows it; the fill is a per-row interpolation between the clean columns just outside the box, feathered 5 px on all four sides, so the feather ring lands on clean wall. Horizontal only: the wall carries a steep vertical gradient from the sign's own glow, which each row's own anchors reproduce, and there are only about 2 px of clean wall under the box before the seated crowd. It is applied ONCE at source resolution, before the grade, so 9:16 and 1:1 get the same retouch and both the washed and the unwashed frame carry it.

Measured against the round-4 render frame by frame: on 9:16 the only pixels that differ over the whole 31-frame hold lie inside (0, 695, 176, 809), on 1:1 inside (0, 336, 176, 448) - every other pixel of every frame is bit-identical, and the change box is clear of the kicker, the sub, both waves and every measured face box. What is left where the sign was is the wall's own glow: the region reads 9-15 points brighter than the wall around it with the same hue (R-G 66-71 against the wall's 61-65), where before it was 63-65 points brighter at R-G 145-154.

  • Major, A_S_0184 (both formats re-cut; lever b) — the QC was right and the round-3 "48 px clear" was a mis-measure: on the rendered square frame the cuff's top sat at y 28 against the band's edge and the whole chalice was hidden under the band (the cup's rim is at P y ≈ 246 at 3.0 s, not the 475 written down). Lever (a) — the square focus for 1651@3.0, 0.45 → 0.36 in 0.02 steps, measured on the square frames 184 / 194 / 204 (cup and cuff clearance to the band's last inked row in their own columns, in delivered pixels, negative = under the band — the cup's rim is at P 246 / 234 / 299 on those frames, the cuff's top at P 406; the bystander's face bottom against the kicker's ink at 775, cards' 10 px margin):

No step clears: the cup needs the window at y0 ≤ ~150 (focus 0.18) while the face rule already fails from 0.43 down. Lever (b) — the in-point. The arm holds its peak from 3.1 to 3.6 s (cup top P 235–245) and comes down only from 3.7 (320), 3.8 (395), 3.867 (476), 3.9 (~530), 3.933 (556), 3.967 (609) — about 50 px a frame — so the suggested 3.1–3.6 cannot clear either. Taken: IMG_1651 from 3.9 s in both formats, square focus 0.43 (same span, same edges, kicker still on frame 92; the chalice is still up beside the head at the in-point, then the sweep). On the delivered square frames:

At 194 the sash runs diagonally (700-745) with the kicker 30 px under it; at 204 the sweep has turned her, her back is at x 600+ and the sash sits at 770-805, so the kicker's top edge lands on the sash, as it did at 204 in every previous round (negative = overlap); 184 is the proof frame. The 204 hairband entry is the headdress disc (she has turned away). Cup rows from the dark-blob detector on the delivered frame (x 800-1000, rim vs the band's last inked row in the same column); cuff, hairband, belt and face boxes read off the delivered frames at 2x with a 20 px grid. No face sits in rows 700-930 on any of 184 / 194 / 204 / 214 (checked without the overlay). The 9:16 frame 184 now shows the same moment (the chalice at the head's level, coming down) — the P framing of that shot was optional polish only, and the in-point move is 0.9 s, larger than "small": said plainly here. Both ends of the moved shot pulled at full size from the raw clip and from both renders: no signage; the defocused red exit-light glow at the far left as in every round. The face box is now measured in delivered square coordinates and asserted in make_cutplan_c (FACES).

  • Minor, A_S_0107 (held at 0.10) — the kicker's beat is fixed at 92, so the only lever is the window. Measured both ways on frames 107 / 137 with the type composited: the literal move, window up 40 px (0.10 -> 0.052), moves the CONTENT down - the crown (the headdress disc at y ~600, the hair to ~760 at 0.10) drops to ~640 / ~800, under the kicker's ink at 775 by ~25 px, and the disc-to-kicker distance shrinks from 175 to 135 px. The opposite move (0.148, content up 40) takes the hair 55 px clear of the kicker but the rising chalice at the out-point (frame 137) ends 20 px from the teal wedge's last inked row (x 907), against 62 px at 0.10 - the very failure round 4 is fixing at 184, and under the 40 px rule. Neither direction is allowed and a later hold is not, so 1651@2.0 stays at 0.10 with the kicker touching the nape below the crown, 15 px under the hair; said so and left.
  • Minor, A_P_0107 / A_P_0184 band sample — the sample point sits INSIDE the gold band's own soft edge, not on footage: the band plate is fully opaque there (rgba [230, 167, 67, 255]) and its gold shades from 252/183/73 at y 1740 to 216/159/64 at y 1776 before the teal at 1780, so nothing under the bands - scrim, boost or vignette (whose x-feather is 120 px; x 250 is outside it, and it is composited under the waves anyway) - can reach it. The 224/171/69 is the staged board JPEG (4:2:0 chroma at that gradient edge, teal bleeding up); the master decoded accurately reads 229/168/67 at frame 184 against the card PNG's 230/167/67, and footage frames vs card frames differ by <= 3. At the interior point (250,1750) every frame, footage or card, reads 253/183/74 against the PNG's 252/183/73. No mask needed; the table below is on every block frame, both formats.

  • Re-checked: zone scan on 9:16 (1533 (limit 1536)); faces at 184 / 194 / 204 / 214 on the square, asserted against the type's own ink; both ends of the moved shot from raw and render, both formats; the six band points on every block frame in both formats; 450 / 450 frames on the two masters; every A frame looked at full size. Round 5 adds: the mark's box measured on all 31 frames of the shot and asserted inside the patch's full-strength core (make_cutplan_c.EXIT_SIGN), and a whole-frame difference against the round-4 render confirming nothing outside that box moved.
QC round 3 — what changed
  • Layer order (major, both formats) — the footage block's scrim is composited under the wave plates (scrim → bands → type), as the cards are built. The six band points sampled on every frame of the block and on the cards, from the delivered files (decoded with the accurate path), against the carousel cards' 43/175/179 · 252/183/73 · 51/56/74:

  • Colour tags (major) — every encode now converts its RGB sources (cards, overlay plates, graded footage) with the BT.709 matrix at limited range and tags the stream (tv,bt709,bt709,bt709,450; before: tv,bt709,unknown,unknown,450, with the card segments converted through swscale's BT.601 default). Gold type, frame 31 vs CA00P-A-1: card 255/220/2, now 253/217/31, before 255/208/20; frame 245 vs CA00P-A-3: card 252/216/2, now 251/217/1, before 255/207/0. The lossless concat is unchanged; the other codes pick the fix up at their next rebuild (render_wide.py still needs it).
  • The 1:1 opener (major) — IMG_1651's in-point 1.5 → 2.0 s, framed at 0.10 (above). Photo-zone luminance at the in-point 93 (was 50) against the carousel card's 103; no lift needed. 9:16 re-checked at 92 / 107 / 137.
  • 1:1 crops — the chalice raise (1651@3.0) 0.50 → 0.45: the window moves up 42 px and the blue cuffs clear the top-right teal by 48 px at frame 184. The 100–120 px asked for would put a seated bystander's face (blurred, behind the feathers, P 230–307 × 1060–1133) under the E of PERFORMANCES from 0.40 down, so the face rule caps the shift; the fingers still dip under the band at the hand's peak (~frames 190–205), as they did at 0.50. No horizontal control on the square window (full source width), so the headdress disc stays where it is.
  • 9:16 polish — scrim +10% from y 1360 (60 px ramp): the ground under the headline block now reads f92 35.7 (was 41.4), f107 26.9 (was 34.0), f138 40.5 (was 51.7), f153 44.5 (was 56.9), f169 31.2 (was 39.0), f184 26.4 (was 32.6), f215 38.3 (was 48.7), f230 42.2 (was 53.8); CA00P-A-2 reads 30.5. Edge vignette on the block only: 120 px feather, −0.4 stop, from y 900, hard in/out on the block's cuts (77 / 245). Cards, grade (locked to the approved fit), bands and type untouched.
  • Re-checked: zone scan on 9:16; both ends of the moved shot from raw and render, full frame, both formats; faces at kicker-on; 450 frames on both masters.
QC round 1 — what changed
  • Blocker — frame 107's butterfly replaced by IMG_1651@1.5 (feather sweep): the 50% tag, Big & Tall and the poster are gone, and the close's dancer no longer appears twice. Same spans, same edges, kicker still on frame 92.
  • Major — the footage wash re-targeted to the cards' wall (above).
  • Minor — the block's scrim lifted 80 px; the cards keep theirs.
  • Re-checked: zone scan on 9:16, faces at kicker-on for all seven shots on both formats, both ends of the new shot from raw and from the render, 450 frames on both masters.
